Welcome to the September 2011 edition of the Cycling Resource Centre Newsletter. Thanks to everyone who gave us great feedback about the first edition. The highlight of this edition is the release of the Australian Cycling Participation report.

National Cycling Participation 2011 (Australia)

On 31 August 2011 the Australian Bicycle Council released the results of the National Cycling Participation Survey.  The survey found that in a typical week around 18% of Australians ride a bicycle for transport and recreation with around 3.6 million people riding for recreation, leisure or sport and 1.2 million people making at least one transport journey.

Lane Widths on Urban Roads Research Report (Australia)

This research report, released by Bicycle Victoria in August 2011, investigates the evidence for determining traffic lane widths. Current Australian guidelines recommend traffic lane widths of 3.5m as standard. This report finds that lanes below 3.5 metres can operate successfully provided that attention is paid to the local circumstances.

St Kilda Road and Royal Parade Bicycle Lane Monitoring (Australia)

This research report looks at  the effectiveness of the cycling improvements implemented along St Kilda Road and Royal Parade in Melbourne. Three treatments were evaluated: green coloured surface treatments within advanced storage boxes; green surface treatments for bicycle lanes at conflict points; and audio-tactile line marking to reinforce bicycle lanes at mid-block locations. The research found an improvement in perceived safety for cyclists and suggest there are real safety benefits from the chosen treatments.

Strategies and Planning
Developing Cycling as a Safe and Appealing Mode of Transport (Australia)

In August 2011 the Victorian Auditor General's Office released a report that looked at the effectiveness of the 2009 Victorian Cycling Strategy. The audit found that the strategy was a first, important step for Victoria to significantly raise the profile and role of cycling as part of a more sustainable transport system. However, serious limitations in its development and implementation compromised its potential to achieve its goal of transforming cycling into a major form of personal transport.

The British Cycling Economy: Gross Cycling Product Report (UK)

This report, released by the London School of Economics in August 2011, shows that cycling generates nearly £3bn a year for the UK economy. The figure takes into account factors such as bicycle manufacturing, cycle and accessory retail and cycle-related employment.

Encouragement and Promotion
Compendium of Cycle Behaviour Change Campaigns (Denmark)

In August 2011 the Danish Cycling Embassy released a compendium of 14 cycle campaigns. This catalogue gives an overview of campaigns for adults and children, their goals, how they worked in practice, and their results.

Safe Routes to School Noteworthy Practices Guide (USA)

This report, released by the US Safe Routes to School in 2011, provides a compendium of projects and practices in the Safe Routes to School Program. The Program was established in 2005 to encourage more children to walk and cycle to school and includes both infrastructure and non-infrastructure components.

City of Sydney Everything's Connected Campaign (Australia)

In August 2011 the City of Sydney released four films celebrating the personal stories of people who ride bicycles in Sydney. The films will be shown in local cinemas starting in late August. The City used real people for the campaign, each person featured had contacted the City to express their thanks for the new cycleways. The resulting films have high production values and are a real reflection of Sydney's diverse bike-riding population.

Upcoming Conferences and Events

The Cycling Resource Centre has an easy to access events calendar with upcoming conferences, presentations and seminars.

September is a busy month for cycling related events.

Asia Pacific Cycle Congress will be held in Brisbane 18-21 September. The Australian Bicycle Council will be on stand 7, please drop by and say hello if you're attending.

World Cycling Research Forum will follow the APCC on 22-23 September in Brisbane.

4th International Urban Design Conference is on 21-23 September in Surfers Paradise.

New Urbanism International and Smart Transport 2011 Conference is on 26-27 September in Perth.

A presentation on recent research into Bicycle Commuting in Melbourne During the 2000s Energy Crisis will be held in Melbourne on 27 September.

2011 Australasian Transport Research Forum will be in Adelaide on 28-30 September.

Coming up in October: Bike Futures (Melbourne).

Grant Opportunities

South Australian local government councils, businesses and community groups can apply for funding for projects that encourage cycling, walking and reducing car use. Local government applications for the black spot program are due towards the end of the year.  >>More
